萬里長城又長又高又厚

“China - A Geographical Sketch”（《中國地理知識》增訂本）一書介紹了中國的萬里長城，簡明扼要?，F(xiàn)將之摘錄如下，先中后英：

“在北京西北郊的八達嶺，有一條氣勢磅礴、雄偉高大的城墻。它隨著山脈的曲折而盤旋，隨著山勢的高低而起伏，好像一條巨龍浮動在群山之中，沿著山脊線向東、西兩側延伸。這就是中國古代的偉大建筑工程之一——萬里長城。這座長城東起渤海之濱的山海關，西至甘肅省的嘉峪關，橫跨遼寧、河北、北京、山西、內蒙古、陜西、寧夏、甘肅等省、市、自治區(qū)，實際長度五千多公里，合華里萬里以上，故稱‘萬里長城’?！?/p>

英文本則如下述：

Rising and falling with the ridges of the Pataling Mountains northwest of Peking, a gigantic rampart stretches off to the east and west like an immense dragon curling through the mountains. This is the Great Wall - a renowned project of ancient China.

It runs from Shanhaikuan on the shores of Pohai Sea in the east to Chiayukuan in Kansu Province in the west, stretching through Liaoning, Hopei, the Peking area, Shansi, Inner Mongolia, Shensi, Ningsia and Kansu. More than 10,000 li (over 5,000 kilometers) long, it is known as the Ten Thousand Li Long Wall

“萬里長城”，直譯作“The Thousand Li Long Wall”，一般都是意譯作“the Great Wall”的。

長城的興建歷史悠久，??????（編者有刪節(jié)）

長城的規(guī)模由此可見：

“萬里長城有的段落分出支叉，??????（編者有刪節(jié)）城墻上，兩邊設有墻欄，中間為通道，每隔一百四十米左右建一樓堡（瞭望哨）。??????”

“樓堡”或“瞭望哨”，英譯作“Watch tower”。

“城墻上，兩邊設有墻欄，中間為通道”這幾句，英文為“Battlements rise above the top of the wall on one side and plain parapets on the other, with a roadway between”。英文是比中文描述得更清楚了。

一華里大約等于三千英里。萬里長城曲曲折折，從東到西，橫跨八個省級行政權。假如從南到北，比從廣州到北京還要長呢。
