朱自清的《背影》英譯

香港學(xué)校中文科所選的教材，是古文多，今文少，文言文多，白話文少。已有不少人提出，這樣的重古輕今，是不對(duì)的。

在中文課本中少得可憐的白話文中，朱自清的作品算是比較多的了，中一有《背影》和《荷塘月色》，中二有《春》，中三有《一張小小的橫幅》和《倫敦的動(dòng)物園》，中四有《論說話》，而中學(xué)會(huì)考又選了《背影》。

《背影》是在一九二五年寫成的，寫父子之情，老是哭哭啼啼，今天看來，是多余的了。不過，坐在描述其父親橫過鐵道的一段，有人還是津津樂道的。

且看這一段：

我看見他戴著黑布小帽，穿著黑布大馬褂，深青布棉袍，蹣跚地走到鐵道邊，慢慢探身下去，尚不大難?？墒撬┻^鐵道，要爬上那邊月臺(tái)，就不容易了。他用兩手攀著上面，兩腳再向上縮；他肥胖的身子向左微傾，顯出努力的樣子，這時(shí)我看見他的背影，我的淚很快地流下來了。??????

朱自清的作品，英譯是少見的，這一篇《背影》卻有翟氏父子（Chu Chai and Winberg Chai）的英譯，上述一段，譯文是這樣的：

I watched him in his black cloth cap and black cloth jacket and dark blue cotton padded gown, as he waddled to the tracks and slowly climbed down——this was not so difficult after all. But when he had crossed the lines he had much trouble clambering up the other side. He clutched the platform with both hand and tried to heave his legs up, his burly body straining to the left and showing much effort. At the sight of his back tears started to my eyes......

英譯是忠實(shí)流暢的。
