《紅樓夢》有新英譯

《紅樓夢》現(xiàn)在有了新的英文譯本，是牛津大學(xué)教授 Hawkes 翻譯的，第一冊二十六回已經(jīng)出版，為英國【企鵝】古典作品叢書。

英譯本的書名為“The Story of the Stone”，即是《石頭記》。

在此之前，《紅樓夢》已有王際真與 兩人的英譯本?，F(xiàn)將三人的一些譯文，對比一下。且舉第五回的一副對聯(lián)：

厚地高天，堪嘆古今情不盡；
癡男怨女，可憐風(fēng)月債難償。

Hawkes 的譯文是這樣的：

Ancient earth and sky
Marvel that love's passion should outlast all time.
Star-crossed men and maids
Groan that love's debts should be so hard to pay.

是譯得忠實的。

再看王際真的英譯：

Enduring as heaven and earth——
no love however ancient can ever die;
Timeless as light and shadow——
no debt of breeze and moonlight can ever be repaid.

王際真把“癡男怨女”譯作“Timeless as light and shadow”，“癡男怨女”簡直“無影無蹤”了。

又看 McHugh 的英譯：

Passions without end, old and new,
Swell broad as the earth, wide as the sky.
Too late, amorous youth, languishing maid, is your repentance,
Ah, to atone for the guilt of wind and moon-play costs pain!

英人 McHugh 把“癡男怨女”句譯作“Too late, amorous youth, languishing maid, is your repentance”，引到莎士比亞的《羅密歐與朱麗葉》去了。
