“紅樓”、“西廂”的英譯

張心滄在“Chinese Literature Popular Fiction and Drama”一書中，通譯了《紅樓夢》第二十三回，這一回是：“西廂記妙詞通戲語 牡丹亭艷曲警芳心”。也即是寶玉黛玉在園中偷看《西廂記》那一回。

且看這一段：

寶玉笑道：“妹妹，你說好不好？”林黛玉笑道：“果然有趣?！睂氂裥Φ溃骸拔揖褪莻€‘多愁多病身’，你就是那‘傾國傾城貌’?！绷主煊衤犃?，不覺帶腮連耳通紅，登時直豎起兩道似蹙非蹙的眉，瞪了兩只似睜非睜的眼，微腮帶怒，薄面含嗔，??????

寶玉套用《西廂記》的兩句，譯文是這樣的：

"The melancholy and sickly lover"——that I am assuredly! And yours——yours, "the face that overthrew cities and kingdoms"!

這兩句，王際真的英譯是這樣的：

I am one "laden with sorrow and maladies" and you are "a beauty that ruins cities and nation."

英人 McHugh 的譯文是這樣的：

I am the hero full of faults and weakness, and you——you are the heroine whose beauty causes the downfall of cities and countries.

他是從《紅樓夢》的德文譯本翻譯成英文的，“多愁多病的身”的英譯似不貼切原文。

Hawkes 的英譯是這樣的：

"How can I, full of sickness and of woe,
Withstand that face which kingdoms could overthrow?"

最后一種英譯，另有奇趣。
